Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) is a highly infectious positive-sense single-stranded RNA virus that causes significant losses in agricultural production. It is recognized for its extreme durability; the virus can remain viable for years in contaminated soil, debris, dried plant materials, and on surfaces of greenhouse tools, making it one of the most persistent pathogens in plant pathology.

This virus has a vast host range, infecting over 150 plant species. The most economically significant hosts include members of the Solanaceae family, such as tomatoes, peppers, tobacco, and eggplants. In addition to cultivated crops, many common weeds can act as asymptomatic reservoirs, maintaining the viral population within the field environment throughout the off-season.

Symptoms of TMV infection typically manifest as distinct mosaic patterns on leaves, characterized by mottled areas of light and dark green. Infected plants often show stunted growth, leaf curling, and distortion. In severe cases, fruits may exhibit discoloration, necrotic lesions, and deformation, rendering them unmarketable. The severity of symptoms often depends on the host cultivar and environmental conditions.

Transmission occurs primarily through mechanical means. The virus enters host tissues via microscopic wounds caused by cultural practices such as transplanting, pruning, staking, or harvesting. Unlike many other plant viruses, TMV is not typically transmitted by aphids, but rather through direct contact between infected and healthy plant sap. Proper hygiene practices are essential to prevent the spread during daily operations.
