This plant pathogen induces systemic viral infection in susceptible hosts, leading to metabolic disturbances and stunted growth. It is a significant concern for agricultural production, particularly in intensive cultivation systems.

The virus primarily affects tobacco plants (Nicotiana tabacum) and various other members of the Solanaceae family. Besides these cultivated plants, certain weeds may act as alternative hosts, harboring the virus during the off-season and acting as a primary source of inoculum for the next crop cycle.
