Ipomoea yellow is a serious phytoplasma-induced disease that impacts the vascular system of the host plant. By colonizing the phloem, the pathogen disrupts nutrient translocation, which leads to stunted growth, metabolic failure, and systemic collapse of the plant's structural integrity.

The disease primarily affects various species of the Ipomoea genus, commonly known as morning glories. It is particularly prevalent in garden settings where environmental conditions favor the lifecycle of vector insects, leading to potential outbreaks that can devastate ornamental plantings if left unmanaged.

Symptoms are distinct and progressive, starting with interveinal yellowing (chlorosis) of the leaves. As the infection advances, plants exhibit stunted internodes, floral abnormalities, and the development of phyllody—a condition where floral parts revert to leaf-like structures. In advanced stages, the plant stops producing viable seeds and becomes unproductive.

Disease development is highly dependent on leafhoppers, which act as primary vectors. The phytoplasma is ingested by the insect during feeding and subsequently transmitted to healthy plants. Warm temperatures and high humidity often coincide with peak vector activity, significantly increasing the rate of disease transmission within a planting area.

Preventive measures and control strategies focus on eliminating the source of infection and managing the insect population.
