Description
The causative agent of this disease is the Ipomovirus cucumisvenaflavi, belonging to the genus Ipomovirus. This virus is a significant plant pathogen that causes systemic infections in hosts, leading to severe physiological disruptions and a substantial reduction in the photosynthetic capacity of the plants.
The primary host for this virus is the cucumber (Cucumis sativus), though it can infect various members of the Cucurbitaceae family. The infection is particularly prevalent and damaging in greenhouse environments where high temperatures and optimal host availability favor the rapid spread of the disease.
The characteristic symptoms include the yellowing of leaf veins, which often starts with smaller veins and progresses to larger ones. Infected plants exhibit leaf mosaic, deformation, and stunted growth. Infected plants typically show reduced fruit set and poor fruit quality, which makes the disease economically devastating for commercial vegetable production.
Transmission occurs primarily through biological vectors. The whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) is the most prominent vector, acquiring the virus through feeding on infected tissues and transmitting it to healthy plants. Mechanical transmission via contaminated tools or during pruning operations is also a potential, though secondary, route of spread within agricultural facilities.
Management of the disease is challenging because once a plant is infected, it cannot be cured. Effective control relies on a strict integrated pest management (IPM) strategy:
