Ipomovirus cucurbitavenaflavi, widely known as the Cucurbit vein yellowing virus (CVYV), is a plant-pathogenic virus that significantly impacts the agricultural sector. Classified within the Ipomovirus genus, this virus interferes with plant physiology by disrupting chlorophyll synthesis and cellular nutrient transport, leading to a systemic infection that compromises the entire plant.
This virus primarily infects crops belonging to the Cucurbitaceae family, including cucumbers, zucchini, pumpkins, and melons. Its host range allows it to thrive in both greenhouse environments and open-field cultivation, making it a persistent challenge for farmers worldwide. The economic impact is significant due to both yield quantity reduction and loss of product marketability.
The primary symptom of CVYV infection is the characteristic chlorosis (yellowing) of the veins on the leaves. As the infection progresses, this yellowing expands, causing a mosaic pattern across the leaf blades. Affected plants often exhibit stunted growth, reduced internode length, and distorted fruit development, which drastically reduces the overall crop output.
