Ipomovirus lycopersici is the causative agent of a significant viral disease in tomatoes known as Tomato vein yellowing virus. This pathogen belongs to the Potyviridae family and is recognized as a major threat to commercial tomato production worldwide, especially in warm climates and greenhouse facilities.

The virus primarily affects tomato plants (Solanum lycopersicum). However, its host range extends to other solanaceous crops and various weeds that act as alternate hosts, allowing the virus to persist in the environment even in the absence of the primary crop, making management highly challenging.

Infected plants typically display characteristic interveinal chlorosis and yellowing of the leaf veins. As the disease progresses, the symptoms manifest as severe leaf yellowing, stunting of the entire plant, and shortened internodes. The fruit quality is significantly compromised, showing uneven ripening, reduced size, and internal tissue necrosis.

The transmission of this virus is strictly mediated by insect vectors, specifically whiteflies such as Bemisia tabaci. These insects acquire the virus by feeding on infected plant tissues and subsequently transmit it to healthy plants. The efficiency of transmission is very high, allowing the disease to spread rapidly through a crop.

Effective management and prevention strategies are essential to minimize economic losses. These include rigorous vector control using chemical insecticides, biological control agents (such as parasitic wasps), and the use of physical barriers like fine-mesh screens in greenhouses. Additionally, practicing strict crop hygiene by removing infected plants and controlling host weeds is critical to breaking the disease cycle.
