The Iranian wheat stripe virus (IWSV) is a significant viral pathogen that affects cereal crops. As a disease agent, it causes systemic infection, disrupting the internal physiological functions of the plant, which leads to stunted development and reduced grain yield potential.
Winter wheat is the primary host for this pathogen. However, the virus can also survive in various wild grass species that serve as a reservoir throughout the growing season, facilitating the spread of the virus to nearby winter wheat fields during emergence.
Symptoms of the disease are characterized by distinct chlorotic stripes running parallel to the leaf veins. Affected plants typically exhibit reduced vigor, poor tillering, and stunted growth. In severe cases, the infected plants produce small, poorly filled heads, leading to significant economic losses for farmers.
The transmission of the virus is primarily facilitated by insect vectors. The development and spread of the disease are highly dependent on environmental conditions that favor the proliferation of these vectors. Warm, dry weather patterns often correlate with higher disease incidence in the field.
