Jasmine phyllody is a serious plant disease caused by phytoplasmas, which are specialized bacteria that lack a cell wall and reside within the plant's phloem. These pathogens interfere with the hormonal balance and metabolic processes of the host plant, leading to profound developmental abnormalities. Because phytoplasmas are obligate parasites, they cannot be cultured in laboratories using standard methods, which complicates diagnostics.

The disease primarily affects various species of the Jasminum genus. The phytoplasma is systemic, meaning it colonizes the entire plant, affecting its vascular tissues, leaves, and reproductive structures. While specific jasmine varieties are most susceptible, the pathogen can also persist in various weed species, which act as reservoirs for the infection throughout the growing season.

The characteristic symptoms include virescence, where floral parts are transformed into green, leaf-like structures, and phyllody, where the entire flower structure is replaced by vegetative growth. Infected plants often show stunted growth, shortened internodes, and excessive branching, resulting in a bushy, "witches' broom" appearance. These plants typically fail to produce flowers, severely impacting their aesthetic value.

Transmission occurs primarily through phloem-feeding insects, such as leafhoppers and planthoppers. When these vectors feed on an infected plant, they ingest the phytoplasma and carry it to healthy plants. Outbreaks are most common in regions with warm climates, where the activity of insect vectors is sustained for longer periods, facilitating rapid spread within nurseries and residential gardens.

Currently, there is no curative treatment for jasmine phyllody once a plant is infected. Management strategies focus entirely on prevention and sanitation. Key steps include the immediate removal and destruction of symptomatic plants to eliminate the source of inoculum, rigorous weed control to reduce reservoirs, and the application of systemic insecticides to manage vector populations. Using high-quality, certified disease-free propagation material is the most effective long-term defense.
