Lettuce ring spot is a viral plant disease caused by the Lettuce ring spot virus (LRSV). This pathogen is a significant concern for commercial lettuce producers, as it compromises plant health, limits marketable yield, and can severely impact the quality of the harvest.
The primary host for this virus is lettuce (Lactuca sativa). However, the disease also affects various other plant species, particularly those within the Asteraceae family. These alternate hosts often act as asymptomatic reservoirs, allowing the virus to persist in the environment even when lettuce is not being grown.
Symptoms typically manifest as distinct chlorotic rings, spots, or line patterns on the leaves of the infected plants. Over time, these patterns may transition into necrotic lesions. The plants often exhibit signs of stunting, loss of vigor, and general physiological distress, which makes the product unsuitable for high-quality markets.

Recommended practices include implementing strict sanitation protocols, removing reservoir weeds, and applying soil treatments to manage nematode populations.
