Description

Lily rosette is a significant viral disease primarily caused by the Tobacco rattle virus (TRV). As an obligate parasite, this virus interferes with the host plant's normal cellular functions, leading to severe morphological stunting and the characteristic rosette growth pattern that gives the disease its name.

The virus affects a wide range of horticultural crops, including true lilies (Lilium), tulips, and daffodils. It is considered one of the most challenging viral infections to manage due to its ability to persist in both soil reservoirs and infected plant tissues over multiple growing seasons.

Symptoms are distinct and usually appear in the early stages of spring growth. Affected plants exhibit shortened internodes, causing the leaves to cluster into a tight, ground-level rosette. The leaves may show mottling or chlorotic spots, and the floral development is severely impaired, resulting in twisted, malformed, or non-opening buds.

The transmission of Lily rosette is largely mediated by soil-borne ectoparasitic nematodes, specifically those in the Trichodorus and Paratrichodorus genera. These nematodes acquire the virus while feeding on infected roots and subsequently inoculate healthy plants. Additionally, the disease spreads systemically through the bulb, making vegetative propagation a primary mode of long-distance dispersal.

Because there is no curative treatment once a lily is infected, management focuses on sanitation and vector control:

  • Sourcing bulbs exclusively from certified, virus-free suppliers.
  • Routinely inspecting plants for symptoms and implementing immediate rogueing of infected specimens.
  • Managing soil nematode populations through chemical treatments or long-term soil solarization.
  • Sanitizing all tools that come into contact with soil or plant sap to prevent mechanical transmission.
