Longan witches broom is a devastating phytoplasma disease affecting Dimocarpus longan trees. The pathogen lives within the plant's phloem tissue, causing severe physiological disruption and hormonal imbalance, which alters the growth pattern of the host.

This disease primarily targets the longan fruit tree, posing a significant threat to commercial orchards in Southeast Asia and other tropical regions where this crop is cultivated. Both young saplings and mature fruit-bearing trees are susceptible to the pathogen, leading to severe economic losses for growers.

The most distinct symptom is the proliferation of thin, weak, and excessively bunched shoots that grow from a single point, resembling a broom. This structural deformity is accompanied by severe chlorosis and leaf reduction. Infected trees often show a total decline in fruit production, making them unproductive after the onset of the infection.

Transmission of the pathogen is facilitated by insect vectors, primarily psyllids, which ingest the phytoplasma while feeding on the phloem sap of infected trees and transmit it to healthy ones. The spread is often correlated with the activity cycles of these insects, which thrive in warm, humid tropical environments.

Effective management strategies require a combination of cultural and chemical interventions. Key practices include:

  • Strict removal and destruction of symptomatic branches to reduce the inoculum source.
  • Application of systematic insecticides to manage and reduce psyllid populations.
  • Utilization of healthy, certified grafting material for propagation.
  • Maintaining robust orchard health to improve tree resilience.

Since the disease is systemic and difficult to cure once the phytoplasma has colonized the tree, prevention remains the gold standard. Regular orchard monitoring is critical for the early detection and containment of the disease to prevent widespread outbreaks across the plantation.
