Description
Lucerne enation is a viral plant disease caused by the Lucerne enation virus (LEV). It is a systemic infection that primarily affects alfalfa (Medicago sativa) and other related legume species, leading to significant yield losses and reduced forage quality.
The virus is characterized by its systemic nature, meaning it spreads throughout the entire vascular system of the host plant. This systemic disruption alters the plant's physiological functions, leading to stunted growth, reduced biomass production, and impaired ability to store nutrients for winter dormancy.
The most distinct symptoms of this disease are the small, crest-like outgrowths known as enations that develop on the abaxial (lower) surface of the leaves along the veins. Infected plants typically exhibit leaf curling, yellowing (chlorosis), and an overall dwarfed appearance, which is often mistaken for nutrient deficiencies or environmental stress.
The primary mode of transmission is through insect vectors, specifically aphids like the pea aphid (Acyrthosiphon pisum). The virus is acquired by the aphid during feeding and transmitted to healthy plants, creating a rapid spread within the field, especially during peak population cycles of the insect vectors.
