Description

Luteovirus is a genus of plant viruses that are responsible for significant agricultural yield losses worldwide. These viruses are characterized by their phloem-limited nature, meaning they multiply exclusively within the plant's vascular tissue, which severely hampers the transport of nutrients from leaves to roots and other growing parts of the plant.

The primary hosts for Luteoviruses are monocotyledonous plants, particularly members of the Poaceae family, such as barley, wheat, oats, and maize. In addition to cereals, some Luteovirus species can impact various other crops, leading to systemic physiological stress and stunted development throughout the growing season.

Symptoms of Luteovirus infection typically include chlorosis (yellowing) or reddening of the leaves, starting from the leaf tips and margins. Infected plants exhibit distinct stunting, reduced tiller number, and overall poor vigor, which often manifests as patches of uneven crop growth throughout the field.

Transmission of the virus is strictly mediated by aphid vectors, which acquire the virus while feeding on infected plant tissues and remain infectious for the remainder of their lives. The environmental factors promoting disease spread include mild winters and springs that favor rapid aphid colonization and movement into young emerging cereal crops.

Management of Luteovirus requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy to minimize the presence of viral reservoirs and insect vectors. Key prevention measures include:

  • Deploying resistant or tolerant crop cultivars developed by breeders.
  • Implementing insecticide applications to control aphid populations when thresholds are exceeded.
  • Managing volunteer crops and grass weeds that act as overwintering reservoirs for the virus.
  • Adjusting planting dates to ensure young, vulnerable plants are not exposed to peak aphid migration periods.
