Description
Soybean dwarf virus (Luteovirus glycinis) is a systemic plant pathogen belonging to the Luteoviridae family. This virus disrupts the normal development of the plant by colonizing the phloem tissue, which significantly restricts the translocation of nutrients throughout the organism.
The primary host for this pathogen is soybean (Glycine max). However, the virus has a host range that includes various wild legumes, which serve as vital reservoirs, allowing the pathogen to survive during periods when primary crops are not present in the field.
The characteristic symptoms of this disease include severe stunting, leaf curling, and distinct chlorosis. In many cases, the leaves turn yellow between the veins while the leaf margins may remain green or become discolored, leading to a reduction in the overall leaf area available for photosynthesis.
Transmission occurs exclusively through aphid vectors, such as the soybean aphid. The virus is acquired by aphids feeding on infected phloem sap. Once acquired, the virus circulates within the aphid's body and is transmitted to healthy plants during subsequent feeding sessions, facilitating rapid spread across the field.
The economic impact of the virus is substantial, as it leads to poor pod set and diminished seed quality and yield. Management strategies focus on chemical control of aphid populations during critical stages of crop development, the use of resistant or tolerant cultivars, and maintaining clean field borders free from alternative host plants.
