Description

Luteovirus kertrihordei (Barley yellow dwarf virus) is a significant viral pathogen that affects various cereal crops worldwide. As a member of the Luteoviridae family, the virus resides strictly in the phloem tissue of the host plant, causing systemic infection that disrupts vascular transport and overall physiological plant function.

The host range is extensive, including major crops like barley, wheat, oats, and maize. In addition to agricultural crops, many perennial and annual grasses serve as natural reservoirs for the virus, ensuring its survival between growing seasons in fields and along field margins.

The clinical symptoms of the disease are distinct and often correlate with the stage of plant development at the time of infection. Key indicators include:

  • discoloration of leaf tips, transitioning from bright yellow to red or purple;
  • severe stunting of the entire plant;
  • reduced tillering and delayed heading;
  • reduced grain size and empty or poorly filled spikes.

The virus is strictly transmitted by aphid vectors, such as the bird cherry-oat aphid and the grain aphid. Transmission occurs through a persistent, circulative process, meaning the aphid must feed on an infected plant to acquire the virus before it can transmit it to a healthy plant. The rate of spread is highly dependent on aphid population dynamics and environmental temperatures.

Managing this disease requires an integrated strategy centered on limiting the interaction between vectors and susceptible crops. Control practices include controlling grassy weeds, selecting resistant or tolerant wheat and barley varieties, and optimizing planting dates to avoid peak aphid migration periods. Strategic insecticide applications are effective only when timed correctly against the aphid vector populations.
