Apple luteovirus, caused by the pathogen Luteovirus mali, is a significant viral disease affecting pome fruit trees. The virus targets the plant's phloem tissue, which disrupts the translocation of photoassimilates throughout the tree, leading to severe physiological stress and growth impairment.

The primary host for this virus is the domesticated apple tree. The pathogen is widespread in many apple-growing regions, posing a persistent threat to both young nursery stock and established orchard trees. Due to its systemic nature, once a tree is infected, it remains a permanent carrier of the virus.

Common symptoms include stunted growth, reduced leaf size, and shortened internodes, which give the tree a characteristic dwarfed appearance. Infected trees often exhibit sparse foliage and reduced vigor. The fruits produced on such trees are typically undersized, deformed, and of poor commercial quality.

The transmission of Luteovirus mali occurs primarily through insect vectors, specifically aphid species that acquire the virus while feeding on infected phloem sap. Furthermore, the use of infected grafting material is a major contributor to the spread of the virus into previously healthy plantations.

Management of the disease centers on the use of virus-indexed plant materials. Growers must implement rigorous nursery protocols to ensure that new trees are free from pathogens.
