Luteovirus pashordei
Description
Parsnip yellows is a viral plant disease caused by the pathogen Luteovirus pashordei. As a member of the Luteoviridae family, this virus is restricted to the phloem of the host plants. It is significant because it cannot be transmitted mechanically through sap or plant contact, relying strictly on aphid vectors for transmission within and between fields.
The virus primarily affects plant species within the Apiaceae family, with parsnips and carrots being the most susceptible crops. Furthermore, many weeds in this family act as asymptomatic reservoirs, allowing the virus to persist in the ecosystem throughout the year and serving as a starting point for annual infections.
The characteristic signs of infection involve severe chlorosis, beginning at the margins of the foliage and progressively spreading inwards. Infected plants show stunted growth, leaf reddening or yellowing, and significantly deformed, stunted taproots. These symptoms lead to reduced yield quality, often rendering the crop unmarketable.
The spread of the disease is entirely dependent on aphid population dynamics. The virus is transmitted in a persistent manner, meaning that once an aphid acquires the virus from an infected plant, it remains infectious for the remainder of its lifespan. Warm, dry weather conditions facilitate higher aphid mobility and reproductive rates, exacerbating the spread of the virus.
Since there are no curative measures for viral infections in agriculture, management strategies focus exclusively on prevention:
- Effective control of aphid vectors using selective insecticides.
- Implementation of buffer zones to separate new crops from potential virus sources.
- Rigorous weed management in and around production areas to eliminate reservoir hosts.
- Selecting resistant or tolerant cultivars where available in seed catalogs.
