Description

Barley yellow dwarf is a significant viral disease affecting various cereal crops, caused by viruses belonging to the genus Luteovirus. This pathogen has a broad host range, including barley, wheat, oats, and maize, making it one of the most economically damaging virus diseases of grasses worldwide.

The virus is transmitted exclusively by aphid species in a persistent manner. The aphid acquires the virus by feeding on infected plants and retains the ability to transmit it throughout its lifespan. The virus does not spread through seeds or mechanical contact, meaning aphid population management is the cornerstone of limiting viral transmission.

Symptoms of the disease are diverse but generally include yellowing, reddening, or bronzing of the leaves, starting from the leaf tips. Infected plants exhibit stunted growth, reduced tillering, and shorter internodes, which gives them a bushy appearance. Severe infections lead to poor grain fill, sterility of the heads, and significantly lower yields.

Environmental conditions that favor aphid migration and colonization play a critical role in the severity of an outbreak. Warm autumns promote early infection of winter crops, while early spring warming facilitates rapid spread into spring-planted cereals. Areas near abandoned fields or grasslands with infected volunteer plants are at the highest risk of epidemic development.

Integrated management is essential for controlling the disease. Key practices include adjusting planting dates to avoid peak aphid flight periods, thorough destruction of volunteer cereals and grassy weeds, and the application of systemic insecticides at the seedling stage if aphid thresholds are exceeded. Furthermore, selecting genetically resistant or tolerant crop varieties remains the most sustainable approach.
