Description

Bean leafroll virus (BLRV), often categorized within the Luteovirus genus, is a significant agricultural pathogen affecting various legume crops. The virus is restricted to the phloem tissue of the host plant, where it interferes with nutrient transport and causes systemic physiological disruption.

The host range of the virus includes major pulse crops such as Phaseolus vulgaris (common bean), chickpeas, peas, and lentils. Additionally, perennial legumes often act as asymptomatic reservoirs, maintaining the viral inoculum in the environment across growing seasons.

Symptoms of the infection typically appear as interveinal yellowing or chlorosis of the older leaves, gradually moving upward. Infected plants exhibit stunted growth, reduced internode length, and significantly lower yields due to poor pod set and shriveled seed development.

Transmission of the virus is strictly mediated by various aphid species in a persistent, circulative manner. This means the virus must circulate through the aphid's body, and once an aphid acquires the virus from an infected plant, it remains infectious for the remainder of its lifespan.

Management strategies focus primarily on breaking the transmission cycle. Controlling aphid populations early in the season is critical to preventing the spread of BLRV. Farmers should also prioritize the use of certified virus-free seed, rotation with non-host crops, and the elimination of perennial weed hosts near agricultural fields.
