As a systemic virus, it colonizes the phloem tissue, effectively disrupting the plant's vascular system and hindering the transport of essential nutrients and photosynthetic products throughout the rose bush.

The primary host for this virus is the genus Rosa. It affects various cultivars including garden roses, shrub roses, and climbing varieties. The infection can be particularly devastating in nursery settings where the virus can spread rapidly through shared equipment or vectors, leading to significant economic losses for growers.

Clinical signs of infection typically include the curling or rolling of leaflets, often accompanied by chlorosis, reddening, or a leathery texture of the leaves. Infected plants display stunted growth, shortened internodes, and a marked reduction in flower production. In advanced stages, the entire structure of the bush becomes weak and loses its ornamental value.

The transmission of Luteovirus rosae is largely mediated by sap-sucking insects, with aphids acting as the primary vectors.
