Description
Barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV), a member of the Luteovirus genus, is the causal agent of one of the most economically damaging viral diseases in cereal crops worldwide. The virus is restricted to the phloem tissue, where it causes systemic infection by hindering the translocation of photoassimilates throughout the plant.
The virus has an extensive host range, infecting all major small-grain cereals including wheat, barley, oats, rye, and triticale. Furthermore, numerous wild grass species act as alternative hosts and reservoirs for the virus, allowing it to persist in the environment between growing seasons.
Infected plants exhibit characteristic symptoms, including yellowing or reddening of leaf tips and margins, often accompanied by significant stunting and reduced internode length. Because the virus interferes with sugar transport, affected plants show stunted root systems and exhibit a rigid, upright growth habit, resulting in poor grain fill and low yields.
Transmission occurs exclusively through various species of cereal aphids, which acquire the virus while feeding on infected plants. The efficiency of transmission depends on the aphid species, the viral strain, and the timing of infestation. Warm autumns or mild springs facilitate aphid migration and rapid spread of the virus within fields.
Management focuses on reducing the incidence of infection through integrated pest management. Key strategies include planting resistant or tolerant varieties, adjusting sowing dates to avoid peak aphid migration periods, and controlling reservoir weeds or volunteer cereals. When thresholds are exceeded, the use of insecticides targeting aphid vectors can help mitigate the spread of the disease.
