Clover yellowing virus (Luteovirus trifolii) is a plant pathogenic virus belonging to the Luteovirus genus. It causes a systemic disease in legume crops, primarily affecting their vascular system. As a viral pathogen, it interferes with the plant's ability to transport nutrients and perform photosynthesis, leading to reduced productivity and stunted development.
The primary hosts for this virus are various clover species (Trifolium spp.). However, the virus can also affect a range of other legumes and wild plants that function as reservoirs. These host plants allow the virus to persist in the field environment throughout the year, making it a constant threat to forage production.
Symptoms are characterized by distinct yellowing of the leaves, typically starting between the veins. As the infection progresses, affected plants show significant signs of stress, including stunted growth, decreased biomass, and reduced vigor. These symptoms are often more pronounced in stressed environments, leading to poor regrowth after cutting.
