Macanavirus is a genus of viruses in the family Betaflexiviridae known to affect specific plant hosts. As a plant pathogen, it primarily impacts members of the Papaveraceae family. Understanding the biological structure of this virus, which consists of a single-stranded RNA genome, is crucial for developing diagnostic tools and management strategies to minimize agricultural impact.
The primary host for this virus is the poppy plant (genus Papaver). Infection can significantly impact commercial poppy production, leading to reduced yield and poor quality of harvested products. While the host range is relatively narrow, the persistence of the virus in local environments poses a continuous threat to fields located in endemic regions or proximity to wild reservoirs.
Symptoms of Macanavirus infection are typical of many plant viruses and include mosaic patterns on leaves, chlorosis, and stunting of the plant body.
