Description
Maize chlorotic mottle virus (MCMV), formerly associated with the genus Machlomovirus, is a highly destructive plant pathogen that specifically impacts corn (maize) production. It is known for its ability to cause severe stunting and yield losses, often becoming particularly devastating when appearing in complex with other viruses.
The primary host for this pathogen is corn, although it has the capacity to infect several wild grass species. These alternative hosts play a critical role in the virus's lifecycle by serving as reservoirs during the off-season, allowing the pathogen to persist in agricultural environments.
The symptoms of the disease typically appear as mild chlorotic spotting on younger leaves, which later progress into distinct chlorotic bands or stripes along the veins. Infected plants often exhibit shortened internodes, stunted growth, and severely malformed or barren ears, resulting in significant economic losses for the farmer.
The transmission of the virus occurs via insect vectors, primarily various species of beetles and thrips. These insects acquire the virus by feeding on infected plant tissues and efficiently spread it throughout the field.
