Cardamom mosaic virus (Macluravirus cardamomi) is a viral pathogen that belongs to the genus Macluravirus and the family Potyviridae. This virus is a major concern for the cultivation of cardamom, a spice crop widely grown in tropical regions. The virus manifests as a systemic infection that profoundly impacts the overall health and vigor of the host plant.
The primary host for this pathogen is the true cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum). The virus interferes with the host's physiological functions, including nutrient uptake and photosynthesis. In many cases, infected plants show poor development, which significantly reduces the economic value of the plantation, as the yield and quality of the seeds are drastically compromised.
Symptoms of the infection typically include mosaic patterns on the leaves, characterized by chlorotic streaks or mottled yellow patches.
