Description
Narcissus yellow stripe virus (Macluravirus narcissi) is a destructive plant pathogen that severely impacts the growth and ornamental value of Narcissus species. As a member of the Macluravirus genus within the Potyviridae family, this virus induces systemic infection, colonizing all plant tissues, including the bulb. This ensures that once a plant is infected, it remains a reservoir for the disease throughout its lifespan.
The primary hosts of this virus are members of the Narcissus genus. While some botanical species may show different levels of tolerance, commercial cultivars are often highly susceptible. The disease is recognized globally as one of the most critical challenges for commercial bulb growers and botanical collectors alike, as it can drastically decrease the quality of the flowers and the vitality of the planting stock.
Symptoms are manifested as pale green or yellow streaks and stripes running parallel to the leaf veins. In severe cases, these streaks turn chlorotic, causing leaf deformation, stunted growth, and necrosis. The flowers are significantly affected as well, showing irregular color breaks and spots, which makes them commercially non-viable for floral markets.
The virus is primarily transmitted through the propagation of infected bulbs, which act as primary inoculums. During the growing season, aphids (such as Aphis fabae and Myzus persicae) act as non-persistent vectors, acquiring the virus during brief feeding sessions on infected plants and transmitting it to healthy ones. Additionally, mechanical transmission via contaminated tools represents a major risk during routine gardening activities.

- Rogue out and destroy any plants showing symptoms of leaf striping.
- Manage aphid populations using systemic or contact insecticides.
- Sterilize all gardening equipment, especially knives and shears, between plants.

Given that no curative treatment exists for Macluravirus narcissi, integrated pest management and strict phytosanitary practices are essential. The long-term success of any daffodil planting relies on the prevention of initial infection and the constant monitoring of the health status of individual bulbs to maintain the aesthetic and genetic integrity of the crop.
