Macroptilium yellow is a viral disease primarily caused by the Macroptilium yellow mosaic virus (MYMV) or similar geminiviruses. This pathogen causes systemic infection in susceptible plants, interfering with their physiological processes and significantly compromising agricultural yield.

The host range of this virus includes various legume species (Fabaceae), with a particular impact on the Macroptilium genus and Phaseolus vulgaris. These crops are highly susceptible to the pathogen, making the disease a significant concern for farmers in tropical and warm temperate agricultural zones.

The primary clinical symptoms of Macroptilium yellow include prominent yellow mosaic patterns on leaves, interveinal chlorosis, and general leaf curling. As the infection progresses, affected plants show severe stunting, reduced pod formation, and poor grain filling, which translates into substantial economic losses for producers.

The disease is mainly transmitted by the whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) in a persistent circulative manner. The virus particles are acquired by the insect while feeding on infected sap and are subsequently transferred to healthy plants. Environmental conditions such as warm temperatures and high humidity promote the proliferation of whitefly populations, thereby accelerating the spread of the disease.

Managing Macroptilium yellow requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. Since there are no direct chemical treatments for viral infections, prevention is critical. This involves the use of certified virus-free seeds, controlling weed hosts that harbor the virus, and timely application of insecticides to suppress whitefly populations during the early stages of crop development.
