Maldovirus is a genus of plant-infecting viruses within the Betaflexiviridae family. These viruses are characterized as systemic pathogens that interfere with the host plant's internal biological processes. Maldovirus primarily targets woody perennials, causing chronic infections that affect the overall vigor of the plant.

The primary host for Maldovirus is the apple tree (Malus domestica). While the virus may be present in other related Rosaceae species, its most significant economic impact is observed in apple orchards. The pathogen spreads primarily through vegetative propagation, grafting, and the use of contaminated pruning tools.

Symptoms of Maldovirus infection include mosaic patterns, chlorotic spotting on leaves, and occasional leaf distortion. In severe cases, fruits exhibit deformations, necrosis, or premature drop, significantly reducing the yield quality. Often, infected trees show decreased annual growth rates compared to healthy specimens.

The development of the disease is facilitated by unfavorable environmental conditions that stress the plant. Once the virus has established a systemic presence, it cannot be cured with chemical pesticides. Therefore, environmental stress management and careful orchard hygiene are critical for containing the viral population.

Management and prevention focus entirely on minimizing the spread of the virus within and between orchards. The most effective strategies include:

  • Utilizing certified virus-free rootstocks and scions for new plantings.
  • Regularly disinfecting all pruning tools with approved sanitizers.
  • Removing and destroying trees that show clear symptoms of infection.
