Grapevine fanleaf virus, taxonomically associated with Maldovirus vitis, is one of the most destructive viral diseases affecting viticulture worldwide. The virus causes a severe condition known as infectious degeneration or fanleaf, characterized by profound physiological disruptions. Because the virus propagates systemically, it negatively impacts every part of the vine, leading to a long-term decline in vineyard productivity.

The transmission of this virus is primarily mediated by soil-dwelling nematodes, specifically the genera Xiphinema and Longidorus. These vectors ingest the virus while feeding on the roots of infected plants and subsequently transmit it to healthy vines. Human activity, particularly the movement of contaminated nursery stock or the use of non-sterilized grafting tools, serves as an additional mechanism for the spread of the disease across new areas.

Symptomatology is quite distinct and diagnostic for agronomists. Infected vines exhibit severe stunting, short internodes, and zigzag growth patterns of the shoots. Leaves show characteristic malformations, including fan-shaped blades, asymmetrical margins, and chlorotic mosaic patterns. In the reproductive phase, the virus causes poor fruit set, millerandage (shot berries), and significant yield reductions.

The economic impact of Maldovirus vitis is devastating. A vineyard infected with this virus cannot be cured, and the condition is progressive. As the virus spreads, the commercial lifespan of the plantation is significantly shortened, often necessitating the complete removal of the vineyard. Managing the virus requires a proactive stance rather than reactive treatment.

Prevention relies on strict phytosanitary regulations. The use of certified, virus-free rootstocks and scions is mandatory for modern vineyard establishment. Before replanting, it is critical to test the soil for the presence of nematode vectors and implement soil fumigation or fallowing if necessary. Ongoing monitoring and rapid eradication of symptomatic vines remain the only reliable way to control the disease.
