Marafivirus is a genus of plant viruses classified under the family Tymoviridae. These pathogens are characterized by their positive-sense single-stranded RNA genome. They are known for causing significant physiological disruptions within host plants, specifically targeting metabolic processes essential for growth and development.
The host range of these viruses primarily includes plants in the Passifloraceae family, with the passion fruit mottle virus being the most notable example. While they often target specific botanical groups, the potential for these viruses to spread to related species remains a subject of ongoing concern for plant pathologists and farmers.
Symptoms of Marafivirus infection typically manifest as mosaic patterns, chlorotic spots on leaves, and general stunting of the plant. In fruit-bearing crops, the infection often leads to malformed fruit and significantly reduced yields, which complicates the commercial production of susceptible cultivars.
The transmission of Marafivirus within an agricultural environment is mainly mediated by insect vectors, such as leafhoppers. These insects acquire the virus while feeding on infected sap and transmit it to healthy plants. Additionally, mechanical transmission through contaminated pruning tools or handling represents a significant risk for the spread of the virus.
Management and prevention strategies focus on integrated pest management (IPM) to control insect vector populations. Furthermore, growers are advised to utilize certified disease-free planting material, sanitize tools after every use, and implement rigorous field sanitation to remove potential virus reservoirs, such as weeds or volunteer plants.
