Description

Citrus marafivirus (Marafivirus citri) is a viral plant pathogen belonging to the Tymoviridae family. It is a small, spherical virus containing a single-stranded RNA genome. As an obligate parasite, it relies entirely on the cellular machinery of the host plant for replication and systemic colonization of the phloem tissue.

The virus primarily affects various species within the Citrus genus, including lemons, oranges, and grapefruits. Because the pathogen spreads throughout the tree via the vascular system, it causes long-term physiological stress that disrupts the translocation of sugars and essential nutrients from leaves to the rest of the plant.

Typical symptoms include mosaic patterns on leaves, yellowing of the veins (vein clearing), and severe stunting of overall growth. Infected trees often show a reduced number of fruits, which are frequently smaller than average and may exhibit internal abnormalities, leading to a significant loss in crop quality and yield capacity.

Transmission of the virus typically occurs through sap-sucking insects, such as aphids and whiteflies, which acquire the virus while feeding on infected tissues and transmit it to healthy hosts. Mechanical transmission via contaminated pruning tools during agricultural operations is another significant risk factor that can lead to rapid spread within an orchard.

Effective management relies on a strategy of exclusion and suppression. Since no cure exists, growers must prioritize the use of certified, virus-free nursery stock. Regular inspection for insect vectors followed by the strategic application of insecticides is vital to break the transmission cycle. Furthermore, standard hygiene practices, such as sterilizing pruning shears between trees, are crucial to prevent mechanical spread.
