Description
Marafivirus maydis is a plant virus belonging to the Marafivirus genus, responsible for viral disease in maize crops. This pathogen interferes with the plant's vascular system, causing significant physiological disruption that inhibits nutrient uptake and severely restricts normal plant growth and development.
The primary host for this virus is maize (Zea mays). However, the virus can also survive in various wild grass species surrounding agricultural fields, which serve as reservoirs. These wild hosts allow the pathogen to persist throughout the year and provide a source of primary inoculum for new crops each season.
Symptoms of the infection typically include chlorotic spots, distinctive striping, and mosaic patterns on the leaves. Infected plants often exhibit severe stunting and reduced grain filling. Because the virus disrupts the plant's metabolic pathways, yield losses can be substantial, especially if infection occurs in the early stages of plant development.
The transmission of Marafivirus maydis is primarily mediated by insect vectors, specifically leafhoppers. These insects acquire the virus by feeding on infected plants and subsequently transmit it to healthy ones. The rate of spread within a field is directly correlated with the population density of these insect vectors and the favorability of environmental conditions for their migration.
Since there are no curative measures for infected plants, the management of this virus is strictly based on preventive strategies:
- implementing integrated pest management (IPM) to control insect vectors;
- removing weeds that act as virus reservoirs in and around the field;
- selecting resistant or tolerant corn hybrids;
- maintaining spatial separation from known disease hotspots;
- ensuring optimal planting times to minimize overlap with peak vector activity.
