Raspberry bushy dwarf virus (Marafivirus rubi) is a significant plant pathogen that affects raspberry crops worldwide. This virus, classified within the Marafivirus genus, induces systemic infection, leading to severe physiological disruptions and a notable decrease in the productivity and vigor of the host plant.
The primary host for this virus is the cultivated raspberry (Rubus idaeus). The virus is systemic, meaning it colonizes the vascular tissues of the plant, including the root system. Due to its systemic nature, once a plant is infected, it remains a permanent source of the virus throughout its lifecycle, which is especially critical during vegetative propagation of nursery stock.
Typical symptoms of infection include stunted growth, shortened internodes, and the development of excessive, thin, and brittle side shoots, which results in a bushy appearance.
