Description
Causative agent and disease type. The Palm streak virus, taxonomically identified as Mastrevirus didactylae, belongs to the Geminiviridae family. It is a viral pathogen characterized by its single-stranded DNA genome. The infection is systemic, causing profound disruptions in the physiological processes of the host plant. It is primarily transmitted by insect vectors, specifically leafhoppers (Cicadellidae), which acquire the virus while feeding on infected sap.
Affected crops. The disease primarily targets the oil palm (Elaeis guineensis). It is a significant concern for commercial plantations, particularly in regions where environmental conditions favor the rapid proliferation of its vectors. While oil palms are the main economic victims, other susceptible species within the Arecaceae family can serve as asymptomatic hosts, facilitating the persistence of the virus in the field.
Symptoms and signs. The infection is marked by distinctive foliage discoloration and growth abnormalities. Key symptoms include:
- yellowish, chlorotic streaking following the pattern of leaf veins;
- overall stunting of the palm, leading to a dwarf-like appearance;
- reduced vigor and diminished photosynthetic capacity;
- distorted leaf development in new growth;
- premature senescence of the oldest leaves.
Conditions for development and severity. The spread of Mastrevirus didactylae is highly correlated with the presence and density of insect vector populations. Warm, humid climates accelerate the life cycles of these vectors, increasing the frequency of virus transmission events. The economic impact is severe, as infected palms experience significant yield losses, reduced oil quality, and potential tree mortality, which necessitates high costs for replanting and management.
Protection and prevention measures. Currently, there are no curative treatments for infected plants. Therefore, integrated pest management (IPM) is crucial. Effective prevention includes: the rigorous removal and destruction of infected palms to eliminate sources of inoculum, the implementation of insecticidal programs to control leafhopper populations, and the use of certified virus-free planting stock. Maintaining plantation hygiene and managing surrounding wild vegetation are also critical practices.
