The causative agent of the disease is Mastrevirus oryzasecundi, a single-stranded DNA virus belonging to the Geminiviridae family. This viral pathogen primarily affects the vascular system of plants, severely impairing their physiological functions and inhibiting effective nutrient distribution throughout the plant organism.

The disease primarily targets cultivated rice (Oryza sativa). Furthermore, the virus maintains its life cycle through various weed species and wild grasses that inhabit field margins, effectively serving as natural reservoirs that harbor the virus during the off-season period.

Symptoms are characterized by distinct chlorotic streaks running parallel to the veins of the leaves. Infected plants typically exhibit severe stunting, reduced tiller formation, and deformed panicles.
