It is a viral disease that specifically attacks the vascular tissues of host plants, severely hindering the translocation of essential nutrients. The virus relies on a circular single-stranded DNA genome, which is typical for this taxonomic group.

Affected crops. The virus primarily infects various species within the Poaceae family. Key agricultural targets include wheat, barley, oats, and rye. Furthermore, the virus can persist in wild grasses that act as alternative hosts, creating a cycle of infection that remains present throughout different seasons and poses a continuous threat to nearby grain production areas.

Symptoms and signs of infection. Infected plants typically exhibit distinct chlorotic streaks running parallel to the leaf veins. As the disease advances, symptoms include stunted growth, excessive tillering, and general leaf chlorosis.
