Description
Mastrevirus saccharumbourbonense is a plant pathogen responsible for streak disease in sugarcane. It is a viral agent that colonizes the phloem tissue, disrupting the host plant's vital physiological functions and drastically reducing biomass accumulation and sugar concentration in the stalks.
The primary host for this virus is sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum). While the virus shows high specificity to the genus Saccharum, it can also persist in various perennial grasses that serve as asymptomatic or symptomatic reservoirs, facilitating the survival of the virus during fallow periods.
The characteristic symptoms include the appearance of continuous or broken chlorotic streaks or stripes running parallel to the leaf veins. Severely affected plants exhibit stunted growth, reduced tillering, and general chlorosis. The severity of these symptoms is often correlated with the age of the plant at the time of initial infection and the virus strain.
The transmission of Mastrevirus saccharumbourbonense is primarily mediated by insect vectors, specifically leafhoppers (Cicadellidae family). These insects acquire the virus by feeding on infected plants and subsequently transmit it to healthy ones.
