Sporoboprim streak virus (Mastrevirus sporoboprimi) is a plant viral disease caused by a member of the Mastrevirus genus. This pathogen is known to specifically target various monocotyledonous plants, interfering with their physiological development and reducing overall photosynthetic efficiency.
The primary hosts for this virus are millet species, although it can occasionally infect a range of other wild grasses. These wild reservoirs are crucial to the virus's survival during the off-season, allowing it to persist in agricultural landscapes even when main host crops are not present.
The symptoms are characterized by distinct chlorotic streaking along the leaf veins, which often progress to general yellowing and mosaic patterns. Infected plants typically exhibit stunted growth, reduced tillering, and failure to develop healthy panicles, leading to significant yield losses in affected agricultural fields.
Transmission of the virus is strictly dependent on insect vectors, most notably leafhoppers. These insects acquire the virus by feeding on infected plants and subsequently transmit it to healthy ones during their feeding process. The spread of the disease is highly seasonal, often peaking when vector populations are at their maximum due to favorable temperature and moisture conditions.
Management and prevention strategies focus on breaking the transmission cycle. Since there is no direct treatment for infected plants, the strategy involves reducing the vector population through timely insecticide applications, implementing crop rotation, and eliminating weed hosts near fields.
