Tobacco streak mastrevirus, a member of the Mastrevirus genus, is a significant plant pathogen that primarily affects tobacco crops. The disease is characterized by systemic infection, which spreads through the vascular system of the host plant, resulting in significant yield losses for farmers worldwide.
The primary host for this virus is Nicotiana tabacum. However, the virus can persist in various weed species found in agricultural landscapes. These alternate hosts act as a reservoir for the pathogen during the winter season or fallow periods, providing a source of inoculum for the next growing season.
Symptoms typically present as distinct streaking patterns on the leaves, chlorosis, and stunted growth of the plant.
