Description

Urochloa streak virus is a plant pathogen belonging to the genus Mastrevirus, characterized by a circular single-stranded DNA genome. It is known for causing significant physiological disruptions in susceptible monocotyledonous plants, leading to reduced productivity in both forage and grain crops.

The host range of this virus primarily includes members of the Poaceae family. Crops such as Urochloa grasses are commonly affected, but the virus can also pose a threat to various cereal species, especially in regions where agricultural fields are in close proximity to native or wild grass reservoirs.

Symptoms of the infection typically manifest as chlorotic streaks appearing on leaves, which usually run parallel to the veins. As the disease advances, infected plants exhibit severe stunting, reduced tillering, and general chlorosis. In severe cases, the reproductive development is stunted, leading to a significant loss in yield and nutritional quality.

Transmission of the virus is strictly mediated by leafhopper vectors. The virus circulates within the vector, and its spread is heavily dependent on the population density and migration patterns of these insects. Climate variables, such as prolonged warm and dry spells, typically facilitate the rapid movement of vectors from infested reservoir weeds to healthy agricultural crops.

Management of Urochloa streak virus requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach because there is no cure for systemic viral infections in field crops. Key strategies for prevention include:

  • Monitoring leafhopper populations and applying targeted insecticides when necessary.
  • Managing weeds and alternate grass hosts in and around cultivated areas.
  • Utilizing resistant or tolerant germplasm where available.
  • Implementing appropriate sowing dates to minimize crop vulnerability during peak vector activity.
