Cucumber mechlorovirus (Mechlorovirus cucumeris) is a dangerous viral disease primarily affecting cucurbit crops. This pathogen belongs to a group of viruses that cause systemic plant damage, disrupting photosynthesis and metabolic processes. The virus is highly unstable in the external environment, but once it enters plant tissues, it rapidly colonizes the vascular system, causing irreversible changes in the development of vegetative organs.

The primary hosts of this virus are cucumbers, melons, squash, and zucchini. Infection causes significant damage in protected soil conditions, where high planting density facilitates the rapid spread of the pathogen. In open fields, the disease occurs less frequently but can lead to a total loss of product marketability if young seedlings are infected at an early stage.

Symptoms of the disease appear as specific leaf mosaicism: the alternation of dark green and light yellow areas, often accompanied by leaf blade deformation. In severe cases, there is general plant growth suppression, shortening of internodes, and flower abortion. On fruits, the infection manifests as mottled coloration and bumpiness, rendering them unsuitable for retail.

The transmission of Mechlorovirus cucumeris occurs through two main routes: mechanical (via tools during pruning, maintenance, or contact between infected and healthy plants) and through insect vectors. The most important role in the epiphytotic process is played by aphids, which, by feeding on the sap of infected plants, transfer viral particles to healthy individuals in seconds.
