Description

The disease identified as Mesta yellow is a type of phytoplasma infection affecting a wide range of agricultural crops. The pathogens involved are specific microorganisms known as phytoplasmas, which reside within the sieve tubes of the plant's phloem, severely disrupting the translocation of nutrients and essential metabolic processes within the plant tissue.

The most susceptible crops include various vegetables from the Solanaceae family, alongside certain legumes and industrial crops. This infection is highly damaging, as it systemically infects all parts of the plant, causing irreversible changes that eventually lead to a significant decline in harvest quality or the total death of the crop in the field.

The primary symptom of the disease is characteristic chlorosis (yellowing), which begins on young shoots and gradually spreads across the entire plant. A common feature is the proliferation of axillary buds, resulting in stunted, bushy growth often referred to as "witches' brooms." Affected plants show stunted development, deformation, and their fruit often fail to mature properly or exhibit poor quality.

The spread of the disease is closely linked to the activity of insect vectors, such as leafhoppers, which feed on the sap of infected plants and transmit the phytoplasmas to healthy crops. High temperatures and humidity levels favor the proliferation of these vectors, which significantly accelerates the rate at which the yellowing disease spreads across agricultural fields during the active growing season.

Effective management strategies rely primarily on controlling the populations of insect vectors through timely insecticide applications. Additionally, it is crucial to use only healthy seeds and transplants, maintain rigorous weed control to eliminate natural reservoirs of the infection, and promptly rogue out any symptomatic plants from the field to prevent further transmission of the pathogen.
