Microterricola is a genus of Gram-positive bacteria within the family Microbacteriaceae. While many species in this genus are common soil inhabitants, certain strains have been identified as opportunistic or specialized plant pathogens that can adversely affect various crops by disrupting their physiological processes.

The disease is caused by the colonization of plant tissues by these bacteria. As a bacterial pathogen, it typically enters the plant through wounds, stomata, or hydathodes. Once inside, the bacteria migrate through the intercellular spaces or the xylem vessels, secreting enzymes that degrade cell wall integrity, leading to tissue decay and systemic weakness.

A wide range of horticultural and agricultural plants can be affected by this pathogen. Key symptoms include chlorosis (yellowing) of leaves, stunted growth, progressive wilting of stems, and, in severe cases, the development of localized necrosis. The browning of internal vascular tissues is a diagnostic feature often indicating the presence of a bacterial infection.

The pathogen thrives in waterlogged soils and stagnant air conditions, facilitating its spread through contaminated water droplets, agricultural equipment, and handling procedures during routine maintenance.

Effective control relies on integrated pest management (IPM) strategies.
