Mulberry leaf curl is a pathological condition primarily caused by viral or phytoplasma agents that disrupt the plant's vascular system. These pathogens interfere with the transport of nutrients and hormones, resulting in significant physiological stress. Once established, the disease significantly impairs the photosynthetic capability of the leaves and hinders the overall development of the tree.
The disease specifically targets mulberry species (Morus spp.). While trees of varying ages can be infected, young saplings often suffer the most severe growth stuntedness, which can permanently affect their future productivity and lifespan within an orchard or garden setting.
Visual symptoms typically include crinkling, curling, and distortion of the leaves, often accompanied by mosaic patterns or yellowing (chlorosis) of the tissue. Internodes may become noticeably shorter, leading to a "rosette" appearance in severe cases. The tree growth becomes stunted, and the yield of fruit or foliage for silkworm rearing decreases drastically.
Disease progression is highly dependent on the presence of insect vectors, such as leafhoppers, which transmit the pathogen while feeding on plant sap. Environmental conditions that support large populations of these vectors, particularly warm and humid weather, facilitate rapid spread across the orchard. Furthermore, contaminated cutting tools play a critical role in secondary transmission.
Effective management and prevention of mulberry leaf curl require strict adherence to phytosanitary protocols. Growers should implement the following:
- Source high-quality, virus-free nursery stock for new plantings.
- Maintain rigorous control of insect vectors using appropriate insecticides.
- Implement early detection and removal of infected branches or entire symptomatic trees.
- Sterilize pruning equipment between different trees to avoid mechanical transmission.
- Monitor the orchard regularly for any signs of leaf abnormality or vector presence.
