It is the causative agent of chronic respiratory disease (CRD) in chickens and infectious sinusitis in turkeys, representing a major global challenge for the poultry industry due to significant productivity losses.

The organism is a bacterium from the class Mollicutes, unique for its lack of a cell wall. This morphological characteristic renders it resistant to common antibiotics like penicillin and makes it highly sensitive to environmental factors, although it persists effectively within the host's respiratory tract.

The primary clinical signs include nasal discharge, coughing, sneezing, and tracheal rales (audible wheezing). In severe cases, the infection causes severe inflammation of the air sacs, leading to systemic weakness and stunted growth. The impact is most devastating in commercial poultry operations where environmental stress is present.

Transmission occurs both vertically (from parent to progeny via the egg) and horizontally through direct contact or aerosol droplets. Environmental stressors such as poor ventilation, high ammonia concentrations, and thermal fluctuations significantly exacerbate the severity and rate of horizontal spread within a flock.

Control measures rely on a combination of strict biosecurity protocols and the use of targeted antimicrobial therapy when necessary, though prevention remains the most cost-effective approach. Developing and maintaining Mycoplasma gallisepticum-free breeder flocks is the gold standard for protecting downstream production units.
