Nanovirus is a genus of plant-infecting viruses characterized by a multipartite genome consisting of small, circular, single-stranded DNA molecules. These viruses are highly specialized pathogens that rely on their unique genomic organization to hijack plant cellular machinery. They are primarily recognized for their impact on leguminous plants, causing severe developmental abnormalities and significant economic losses.

The host range of Nanovirus species is typically concentrated within the Fabaceae family. Key crops susceptible to these viruses include peas, beans, chickpeas, and lentils. Due to the systemic nature of the infection, once a plant is colonized, the virus spreads through the phloem, affecting the overall physiological status and reproductive potential of the host crop throughout the growing season.

Symptoms of Nanovirus infection include stunting, chlorosis of the younger leaves, and severe leaf deformation or curling. The shortening of internodes is a characteristic feature that gives affected plants a rosetted appearance. Infected crops often produce very few or no pods, and the seeds that do develop are frequently shriveled and unviable, leading to substantial reductions in both quality and yield.

Transmission occurs exclusively via aphid vectors in a persistent manner. The virus is acquired by the aphid during feeding on infected plants and is then transmitted to healthy plants. Environmental conditions such as mild temperatures and dry spells, which favor rapid aphid reproduction, are critical factors for the rapid spread of the virus across fields and throughout agricultural regions.

Effective management and prevention strategies focus on integrated pest management (IPM) practices. Since there are no direct chemical treatments to cure infected plants, control efforts emphasize the reduction of the aphid vector population through the timely application of systemic insecticides. Additionally, farmers are advised to eliminate weed reservoirs, implement crop rotation, and use resistant or tolerant cultivars to minimize the risk of infection.
