Pathogen and disease type: Alfalfa nanovirus (Nanovirus medicagonis) is a viral plant disease belonging to the Nanoviridae family. It is characterized by small, icosahedral virions and a unique multi-segmented single-stranded DNA genome, which facilitates efficient replication within the host plant's tissues.

Host range: The primary host of this pathogen is alfalfa (Medicago sativa). However, various other species within the Fabaceae family, including certain clovers and wild legumes, can also serve as alternative hosts, acting as reservoirs that sustain the virus in the environment throughout the year.

Symptoms and signs: The infection typically manifests as severe stunting, commonly referred to as "nanism." Infected plants exhibit shortened internodes, chlorotic or yellowed leaves, and significant leaf malformation. In advanced stages, the entire plant architecture becomes bushy and stunted, leading to reduced yield and poor tolerance to winter cold.

Conditions for development: The virus is transmitted in a persistent manner primarily by aphid vectors, such as the pea aphid or the alfalfa aphid. The spread is most rapid during warm, dry growing seasons that favor the proliferation and migration of these insects. Once the aphid acquires the virus, it remains infectious for the rest of its life, facilitating widespread transmission within the field.

Control and prevention: Managing Alfalfa nanovirus requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. Primary strategies include controlling aphid populations with systemic insecticides during high-risk periods, removing weeds that serve as virus reservoirs, and establishing spatial isolation between newly seeded fields and established, potentially infected stands. Selecting resistant or tolerant cultivars remains the most sustainable method for reducing crop damage.
