Narcissus symptomless infection refers to a pathological state where plants host viral pathogens without displaying visible symptoms. This is commonly associated with latent viruses such as Narcissus Mosaic Virus (NMV) or Narcissus Yellow Stripe Virus (NYSV). These viruses survive within the plant tissues by balancing their replication rates, thus avoiding acute host damage.
The causative agent is typically a systemic viral pathogen. This disease is classified as a chronic systemic infection. The virus colonizes the plant's vascular system and is spread through the distribution of infected bulb stocks, as well as mechanical transmission and vectors like aphids that carry the virus during their feeding cycles.
The primary clinical sign is the complete lack of morphological symptoms. Infected plants appear vigorous, with normal leaf color and flower development. This deceptive health makes it impossible to identify the infection during routine visual field inspections, allowing the disease to persist in plant collections for many years.
