Necroviruses (genus Necrovirus) are a group of phytopathogenic viruses responsible for causing necrotic lesions in various agricultural and ornamental crops. A prominent member of this group is the Tobacco Necrosis Virus (TNV), known for its exceptional stability in the environment and its ability to persist in soil for extended periods, remaining infectious even without a host plant.

These viruses affect a wide range of host plants, including vegetable crops like tomatoes, cucumbers, and lettuce, as well as ornamentals such as tulips, lilies, and begonias. Young plants during active growth phases are particularly susceptible, especially when cultivated in greenhouses where environmental conditions may favor the development of the viral vector.

Typical symptoms of infection include the appearance of necrotic spots on leaves, wilting of plant parts, and significant necrotic decay of root systems. In systemic cases, plants exhibit stunted growth, leaf deformation, and tissue dieback. The severity of these symptoms often results in substantial economic losses due to reduced yields and the degradation of marketable product quality.

The development and spread of Necrovirus are intrinsically linked to the presence of the soil-borne fungus Olpidium brassicae, which acts as a vector. The virus does not rely on insects for transmission; instead, it spreads through infested soil, irrigation water, contaminated tools, and root-to-root contact. Excess soil moisture provides the necessary conditions for the fungal zoospores to move effectively and infect new roots.

Management strategies focus on strict sanitation and preventive practices. Key measures include the sterilization of soil substrates, the use of certified healthy planting material, and regular disinfection of agricultural equipment. Farmers should promptly rogue infected plants, including the surrounding soil, and maintain optimal irrigation schedules to prevent waterlogging. Since no direct curative treatments exist for these viruses, controlling the fungal vector is critical for minimizing the impact of the disease.
