Description

The burrowing nematode (Radopholus similis) is a devastating endoparasitic nematode responsible for severe root rot disease. As a migratory parasite, it burrows directly into the root tissue, causing significant damage through its feeding activity and creating tunnels that provide entry points for secondary bacterial and fungal pathogens.

The primary crop affected by this pathogen is the banana. However, the pest is highly polyphagous and infests a wide array of crops, including citrus, pineapple, black pepper, coffee, and numerous ornamental plants, posing a constant threat to tropical agriculture worldwide.

Symptoms of infestation include stunted plant growth, chlorosis, and wilting, often leading to a condition known as toppling disease. If the roots are excavated, they exhibit dark, necrotic lesions and extensive cavities, eventually resulting in the complete disintegration of the root system and plant collapse due to the loss of physical anchorage.

The development and spread of Radopholus similis are favored by warm, moist soil conditions. The primary pathway of spread is the movement of infested rhizomes or suckers used as planting material, although contaminated farm tools and water run-off also contribute significantly to the pathogen's dissemination across fields.

Effective management strategies require an integrated approach. This involves the use of certified nematode-free planting material, often treated with hot water immersion. Additionally, farmers should practice strict sanitation of tools, maintain proper field drainage, and implement crop rotation cycles, while also considering the application of appropriate nematicides where infestations are severe.
